Saving Money on Chicken

I don't know about you, but I can never eat a whole chicken breast. Plus, a portion size is really only about half of a chicken breast. We got to where we were wasting a lot of chicken...I would mean to eat the remainder on a salad...but rarely did.

We began splitting a chicken breast, but I hated how thick they were and they just took forever to cook. So, the last time I had a chicken freezer cooking day I tried something new...and it worked wonderfully for us.

I cut the chicken breast in half lengthwise. It made two pieces and they cook quickly and evenly.

Then I put them in a freezer bag with marinade to save for later!

I was hesitant at first, but is working great! I love that we are reducing waste AND saving money!

What tips do you have to save money on meat?

Great idea! My husband would want a whole chicken breast, but I could always just cook him two. I love that they cook faster this way :)

You mentioned doing this on your freezer cooking entry and after reading it I had, you guessed it, chicken to marinate. So I tried it and LOVED it. You seem to have this ability to post up what I need to do. Like the Taco Meat yesterday!! And guess what?! Yep, I have chicken to marinate again today!! Have I told you lately how happy I am that I found you?! Thanks Katie!!

Great idea Katie! We usually buy our chicken in bulk - about 40lbs at a time and cut it ourselves. I will be sure to tell hubby of this trick of yours!

PS: So, you don't think were crazy...we have a chest freezer and buy chicken at $1.39/lb - we save a ton of money that way lol

!!Great Post!!

Shelby, me of all people would not dare call you crazy. I mean, we bought 125 pounds of beef last year at one time. In fact I want in on this cheap chicken...how do you get it so cheap?

Our local italian meat market has AMAZING deals!! They even have chicken leg quarters for $0.25/lb!!

We stock up whenever prices are super low and we always have meat on hand - no more spending $4.99 for a package of chicken!

We are in South Florida - thats pretty far from where you are at...but if you are ever in the area on vaca, let me know - i will let you in on all the good deals...unless there is a way to ship it to ya =)

Awesome idea. I think we're all guilty of eating too much protein in my family... so that's one way of cutting back!

You're a genius, Katie!

Katie said...

Johnlyn, you can cut back this way and it still looks the same...maybe the family won't even notice :)

Tightwad Mom, thanks...but not hardly!!!
