I was browsing Food Network's website the other day, and I found some cool information. I always have problems with portion size. What I label as a portion is clearly like 2 portions or more.
Meat- should be roughly the size of a deck of cards, or 3 ounces
Pasta or Rice- should be the size of a tennis ball
Peanut Butter- should be the size of a ping pong ball
Vegetables- cooked veggies should be the size of a baseball, or half a cup
Dried Fruit- should be the size of a large egg or a golf ball
Baked Potato- should be the size of a computer mouse (and they say they shouldn't be covered in sour cream...not sure how I feel about that)
Cheese- should be the size of six dice (seriously, that is like rabbit food...)
Pancakes- you should only eat 1 the size of a cd (for real, who actually eats 1 tiny baby pancake...I am quite certain that a kids meal comes with like 4-5 that size. I could pound a few cd sized pancake with a side of bacon.)
How do you measure portions?

It is sad but no I don't pay attention to portion size. I have a man and 3 teenagers in the house who are always looking for food!
In our house the 2 teenage girls eat more than the teenage boy. I could not imagine telling any of them they could only have 1 piece of chicken for dinner or 1/2 cup of veggies.
Isn't funny how we super size everything! I pulled out my china dishes that were my mother's (they're about 40 years old) and they are a third of the size that my everyday dishes (that are one year old). We must think that we need to fill up our plates, real portion sizes would get lost on my super size plates! LOL!
Michele,
Yeah, with a house full of teenagers I am sure you are always running low on food :)
Half a cup of veggies...now that IS stingy...they are healthy, right????
Tightwad Mom,
That is so interesting about the plates size. I have heard that, but have never really looked at old plates I guess.
I was told somewhere that we should really eat our dinner on a salad plate.
Very interesting...
This is an area that I really need to address... I don't watch portions like I should. Thanks for this post!
Misty...I think we all need to address it at some level!
Thanks for posting thiss
