Cooking Resolutions

It seems most people either like New Year's resolutions or they don't...not too many people are riding the fence on this one. I happen to like setting goals for myself each year. Some work out and some don't fair so well, but it is always nice to take a look at my life and see where improvements can be made.

This year I have made a few goals for each area of my life. Instead of boring you with all of them, I thought I would share my cooking resolutions.

Last year I planned out a massive list of things I wanted to learn to cook through 2010. Looking back, I didn't do too hot. I kind of forgot about it somewhere through the year, and only completed about half of the list.

This year is going to be different. I am shooting for just a few cooking resolutions, and hopefully I will be successful at them. Here they are...

1. Cook healthier foods that taste good

2. Create more of my own recipes

That's it...I'm keeping it simple!

Now I want to hear from you!

Are you trying to eat healthier? Are you cooking your way through a new cookbook? Do you want to master homemade bread or begin cake decorating? Are you planning to start gardening?

Those are good resolutions! We're trying to limit eating sweets to the weekends. That means less cooking for me. (We're kind of sugar fiends.)

My daughter's emergency gall bladder surgery a couple weeks ago was a kind of wake up call for me. After talking to the surgeon and doctors, I have come to realize how much our eating habits affect our health. I have made a commitment to add in more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains into our diet and cut out as many processed foods as possible. That means making more things from scratch (i.e. bread, yogurt, white sauce vs. cream soup), but it will be worth it in the long run!

Bitterroot Mama,

We have eliminated sweets here. I hope to eventually be able to indulge on the weekends...but for now it is sugar free pudding and jello! Yum!

Tightwad Mom,

I will be curious to read how you make the changes on a budget still! Good for you...I think we all need to do that!

I spent all day yesterday pondering my cooking resolutions for 2011. I hadn't really given it much thought until your post. I went back and looked at my cooking resolutions from last year's post and I was really stumped. I guess I just want to "keep on, keeping on"... The only thing I would like to add is that in 2011, I would like to be open about trying new foods and cooking with new ingredients. Other than that, just more of last year, because through this blog (and you), I really grew in the kitchen in 2010. :)

Ok, diet is a bad 4 letter word to me. Sooo, I am searching for ways to cook my fav foods in a healthier way. Also, search for new recipes for healthy food that my family will like and add it to the "regular" foods we eat. We love the Tortilla soup and Beef cabbage soup and have added it to our healthy regular food list! Thanks Katie. I also appreciate your list of blogs. I have search and found ideas there also.

Misty, I think it is safe to say that you made enough changes in 2010 that you are good for 2011!

Try new foods is great!

I think letting Rylee pick out more recipes would be awesome! She is quite the little cook...I love it :)
